actually not the same thing as 'hunger.' Here is the
difference:
Hunger is caused by the body's need for
nutrition. For example, when we restrict our calories we
are usually not getting enough proper nutrition. So after
a few days of cutting calories, we become UNCONTROLLABLY
HUNGRY! Our bodies are 'screaming' for nutrition and this
instinctual feeling causes us to overeat.
Cravings are almost always the result of our
blood-glucose levels becoming unstable. Certain foods
cause blood sugar 'spikes' which trigger protective chemical
responses in our bodies. But this response almost always
leads to a blood sugar 'crash'. When this happens, our
body begins telling us we need fast burning
carbohydrates. This is our body's way of getting our
blood sugar levels back up as quickly as possible. This
chemical reaction creates 'cravings'. We have an
unusually strong urge to eat something NOW - and we are craving
the BAD carbohydrates because these will cause our blood sugar
levels to rise the quickest.
Cravings are NOT the same thing as
Hunger.
Therefore, 'cravings' are
actually NOT the same thing as 'hunger'. Once I understood the
difference, I learned to control the causes and no longer have
any problems overeating. You can do it too!
But an interesting and
nearly uncontrollable cycle emerges from cravings. Certain
foods cause a blood sugar spike - which triggers a chemical
reaction that causes our blood sugar levels to crash - which
creates extreme 'cravings' for bad carbs. BUT the bad carbs do
NOT level our blood sugar levels. Instead, our blood sugar
spikes again. And crashes. We crave - so we eat - etc., etc.,
etc. Without us knowing the reason, we are overeating and can't
seem to control it. Sound familiar?
